    Mission

The San Francisco World Percussion Arts Festival presents public performances and educational activities in order to preserve global traditions of percussive art forms and promote original and contemporary works stemming from these traditions within current social contexts in order to reflect and celebrate our common humanity.

    History

From 2007-2009, Maikaze Daiko successfully produced the Harvest Moon Taiko Fest, a San Francisco festival that showcased bay area taiko groups performing original work that was partially funded in 2008 by the Zellerbach Family Foundation. As a result of great interest, both internally and externally, in showcasing artists from other cultural traditions as well as reaching a larger audience, the format of the Harvest Moon Taiko Fest changed to the San Francisco World Percussion Arts Festival (WPAF) in 2010 with additional funding from the Zellerbach Family Foundation. With the mission of now presenting original and new works stemming from all cultural traditions of percussion, the festival has become a bi-annual Bay Area tradition, consisting of workshops and programs presented by master percussionists and related artists from different global traditions. The SF World Percussion Arts Festival has received funding from both Zellerbach Family Foundation and the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation.
